📝 The “How, When & Why” of Admissions
When do admissions open?
For the 2025/2026 Academic Year, most universities will likely open their portals immediately after WASSCE results are released (typically December 2025 or January 2026).
- Public Universities: Usually sell forms from Jan–April.
- Private Universities: Often have rolling admissions (you can apply almost year-round), but it’s best to apply early for scholarships.
How do I apply?
Gone are the days of manual forms. It is almost entirely digital now.
- Buy an E-Voucher: Go to a bank (GCB, Ecobank, Zenith, CBG etc.) or use USSD codes (e.g.,
*887*9#) provided by the university. - Go Online: Use the serial number and PIN from the voucher to log into the university’s admission portal.
- Fill the Data: Enter your WASSCE Index Number carefully. The system will often pull your results automatically from WAEC once they are ready.
- Upload Photo: A professional passport-sized photo.
- Submit: Print the confirmation page (some schools require you to mail this, others don’t).
How are Cut-Off Points Calculated?
Universities use your Aggregate Score based on your best 6 subjects:
- 3 Core Subjects: Core Math, English, and Integrated Science (or Social Studies for non-science majors in some unis).
- 3 Elective Subjects: Your best three from your area of study.
- Grading: A1=1, B2=2, B3=3… C6=6.
- The Goal: The lower the number, the better. An aggregate of 24 means you averaged a C4 in all subjects.
The “D7” Warning
This is the most common reason students get rejected. Most public universities (UG, KNUST, UCC) DO NOT accept grades below C6 (i.e., D7, E8, F9) in Core Mathematics, English, or Integrated Science for Degree programs.
- If you have a D7: You may need to:
- Write NOV/DEC (Private WASSCE).
- Apply for a Diploma program (which often accepts D7) and upgrade to a degree later.
- Apply to some private universities that may offer “Access Courses.”
- Browse through various Private Institutions if you’ll be accepted
Final Advice
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. If your estimated aggregate is around 20–24, apply to a “Safety School” (like UEW, UDS, or a Technical University) alongside your dream choice (Legon or KNUST).
