Thousands Gather at Independence Square in Emotional Tribute to Daddy Lumba
In a deeply moving show of love, respect, and solidarity, thousands of Ghanaians gathered at Independence Square to honour the legendary Daddy Lumba during an emotional candlelight vigil held in his name.
The atmosphere was electric with empathy as thousands of Ghanaians assembled at the Independence Square on the night of August 2, 2025, to honour the late music legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, affectionately known as Daddy Lumba.
Daddy Lumba died at The Bank Hospital, located in Cantonments, Accra, in the early morning hours of July 26, 2025. Before his death, he had been unwell and had suffered from an undisclosed health issue for over fifteen years.
Participants, predominantly dressed in black, illuminated the square with flickering candles as they reminisced about Daddy Lumba’s influence on Ghana’s music scene.
Fans from all walks of life, young and old, joined hands to celebrate the life, legacy, and enduring influence of one of Ghana’s greatest highlife musicians. The atmosphere was thick with nostalgia as familiar melodies filled the air, evoking powerful emotions and memories.
A Night of Reflection, Music, and Memories
The vigil began just before sunset, with many attendees donning all-white or black apparel. As the sky darkened, a sea of candlelight illuminated the Square, symbolizing the undying love fans hold for the icon.
From timeless classics like “Theresa” to crowd-favourites like “Aben Wo Aha”, speakers and performers paid heartfelt tributes, recounting how Daddy Lumba’s music touched hearts and shaped generations.
Fans openly wept, sang along, and held portraits, posters, and customized memorabilia of the highlife legend.
Voices from the Vigil
“Daddy Lumba’s songs walked me through the hardest times in life. Being here tonight is the least I can do to say thank you,” said Adwoa Asantewaa, a long-time fan who traveled from Kumasi for the vigil.
“It’s more than just music. His lyrics are life. They carry spirit,” another mourner added, as emotional tributes poured in.
A Historic Gathering of Love
The vigil quickly went viral online, with the hashtag #LumbaForever trending across social media platforms. Celebrities, fellow musicians, and dignitaries also showed their support, either in person or virtually, sharing tribute messages and videos.
Local vendors sold branded Lumba merchandise, and gospel choirs interspersed tributes with emotional renditions of his gospel classics.
Security was tight, and medical tents were available for those overcome by emotion, fatigue, or crowd pressure. Fortunately, organizers reported no major incidents.
